Commissioned to Discipleship

09-02-2018 • Daniel McGinty

Jesus’ primary method for the growth of his church is making disciples.

Commissioned to Discipleship

DEFINITION: to disciple is to teach or train a student, pupil, or devoted follower of a teaching.

Matthew 28:18-20
18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of[f] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,[g] I am with you always,[h] to the end of the age.”

Jesus’ primary method for the growth of his church is making disciples.

Where Evangelism’s purpose is for Salvation, Discipleship’s goal is Sanctification.

QUESTION: All Christians should share their faith, but should we all be a disciple maker?

Mark 3:13-15
13 Then He went up the mountain and summoned those He wanted, and they came to Him. 14 He also appointed 12—He also named them apostles[b]—to be with Him, to send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to[c] drive out demons.

1) Jesus CALLED His Disciples
a) Jesus looked into the soul of the fisherman, tax collector, rebel, and saw potential.
b) Jesus Invited these ordinary men to an extraordinary mission.

2) Jesus was WITH his disciples
a) Jesus did life with his disciples, setting an example for ministry.
b) Jesus took advantage of teachable moments. Ceasera of Philipi

3) Jesus SENT his disciples
a) Jesus Gave his disciples a chance to practice what they were taught.

4) Jesus EMPOWERED his disciples
a) Jesus extended his authority & Power to his disciples to expand his ministry
b) The Holy Spirit gives insight to both the “Discipler” and the “disciplee”.

Why is disciple-making so powerful? Disciples MAKE Disciples!

A Casual Christian will never evangelize, but a disciple will.
