True Love

05-06-2018 • Dr. Steve Washburn

It’s very important to Jesus that His followers love each other.

(John 13:31-35) When he [Judas] had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once. Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’ so now I tell you. I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

TRUE LOVE

it’s very important to Jesus that His followers love each other.

1. Loving Other Followers is a COMMANDMENT

(Matthew 22:37-40) [Jesus] said to them, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

(34) “I give you a new commandment: love one another.”

A. Love God.

B. Love People.

C. Love Followers.

2. Loving Other Follower is an ACTION

A. Love is not a feeling.

(34b) “Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.”

B. Love is not just words.

(37) “Lord,” Peter asked, “Why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You!”

(38) Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.”

C. Love is what we DO.

(33) “Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’ so now I tell you.”

3. Loving Other Followers is a WITNESS

A. Our buildings won’t prove we are Christ’s disciples.

B. Our programs won’t prove we are Christ’s disciples.

C. Our words won’t prove we are Christ’s disciples.

D. Our love for each other WILL prove we are Christ’s disciples.

(35) By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
