The Mystery of Christianity

09-11-2024 • Dr. Steve Washburn

Dr. Steve Washburn speaks about the mystery of Christianity.

The Mystery of Christianity (Colossians 1:25-28)

  • Paul speaks about the “mystery hidden for ages” revealed to believers.
  • Christianity can seem puzzling to non-believers.
  • Life itself is a mystery, and human understanding is limited.

The Mystery of Christianity:

  • The gospel is a mysterious message, often misunderstood as a “mystery religion” in Paul’s time.
  • The gospel has transformative power: it changes lives (provides direction, happiness, comfort, healing, etc.).

The Mysterious Messiah:

  • Jesus is the Messiah for both Jews and Gentiles.
  • Jews believed the Messiah’s promises were just for them, while non-Jews struggled to see how the Messiah applied to them.
  • Paul teaches that sin is a universal problem, and the Messiah is for the whole world.

The Hope of Glory:

  • Jesus is the only true hope for eternity.
  • Even a well-thought-out plan can fall short without a key element, just as any plan for eternity without Jesus will fail.

Spiritual Maturity:

  • Believers must mature in their faith by becoming rooted in the gospel and not being misled by false teachings.
  • Maturity means reflecting Christ more accurately, with fewer mistakes and more spiritual strength.

Conclusion:

  • Full commitment to the gospel message is essential for spiritual maturity and strength.
  • Jesus is the foundation of hope and the key to eternal life.
