WELCOME!

The history of the Deaf Ministry at FBC reaches back off and on approximately 20 years are more.  At present it consists of Interpreting Sunday morning church services at 11:00am every Sunday (front right pews facing the stage), and as needed or requested Grow groups that meet at 9:30am every Sunday.  Interpreting can also be offered for our Awana Bible memorization program for Elementary to High School Youth and any program or activity sponsored by FBC requested by those needing or wanting interpretation services.

Sandra has been certified by RID with the CSC (Comprehensive Skills Certificate ) and the NIC (National Interpreters Certificate).  Every effort is made to provide qualified, experienced interpreters.  The Predominate modes that are used consist of ASL (American Sign Language) and CASE ( Conceptually Accurate Signed English).

SANDRA HEFLIN, MA, RID NIC , EIPA

Sandra Heflin has taught Deaf Education and Interpreting for over 40 years and worked as an interpreter while earning a BA in Education from California Baptist University and a Masters in Deaf Education from Cal State University, Northridge.  In 1982 she received a CSC from RID (Comprehensive Skills Certificate from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).  In 2010 she qualified for a certificate in Educational Interpreting (E.I.P.A.).   She has taught American Sign Language (ASL) at high school and college levels as well as in the community.  She has taught ASL interpreting at the University and Graduate levels.

While Director of a Deaf Education Program at Stockdale Christian School in Bakersfield, CA, Sandra founded a non-profit organization (www.ColorofLanguage.com) to develop materials to aid in teaching Deaf children and assisting parents and families to effectively communicate with their Deaf family members. She is retired from the staff interpreter position at Cal State, Bakersfield. 

She became a Christian at seven years old when she learned that God loved her and gave His Only Son for her so she could be forgiven and live with Him in eternity.  She has been in love with Him ever since and looking forward to the day she sees Him face to face.
