Since God is sovereign and has sent His Servant to bring salvation, we should place our hope in Him and join His mission.
Introduction
Isaiah 40–42 emphasizes God’s comfort for His people (Isaiah 40:1).
God’s Word is not just to be known, but rightly understood and applied (Isaiah 40:8).
The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17).
We are meant to respond to God’s Word through action, trust, and obedience.
God’s Sovereignty and Comfort
God declares His coming glory and sovereignty despite present circumstances (Isaiah 40:5, 40:10).
His Word stands forever, as emphasized using “rhema” in the Greek (Isaiah 40:8).
God’s greatness is unmatched: sovereign over creation, the nations, and idols (Isaiah 40:12–31).
He renews those who wait on Him (Isaiah 40:31).
God Calls the Nations
In Isaiah 41, God gathers the nations and reveals His sovereignty over history (Isaiah 41:1–4).
He declares that world events and rulers (like those of Russia, China, Iran, and the U.S.) do not control history—only God does.
Believers are called not to fear or anxiously look around (Isaiah 41:10, 41:13–14).
God has made His people new and called them to act (Isaiah 41:15–16).
Challenge to False Gods
God challenges idols to predict the future or explain the past (Isaiah 41:21–24).
There is silence from the idols—they are powerless and empty.
God alone has declared events and fulfilled them (Isaiah 41:25–29).
Behold My Servant
A new character is introduced in Isaiah 42:1—the Servant upheld, chosen, and delighted in by God (Isaiah 42:1).
This Servant is humble, healing, faithful, and brings justice (Isaiah 42:2–4).
He brings justice to the nations, not by force but with gentleness and perseverance.
He is empowered with God’s Spirit (Isaiah 42:1).
The Servant will be a covenant and a light to the nations, opening blind eyes and freeing captives (Isaiah 42:6–7).
God’s Declaration
God affirms His identity and power: He gives life and rules history (Isaiah 42:5, 42:8–9).
He will not share His glory with idols.
Call to Praise
God commands a new song of praise in light of the Servant and His coming mission (Isaiah 42:10–12).
Worship should overflow from comfort and joy, even in difficult circumstances.
God’s Eagerness to Save
God has restrained Himself, but He will act with power and eagerness, like a woman in labor (Isaiah 42:13–14).
He promises to lead the blind and bring light and healing (Isaiah 42:16).
Idols and those who trust in them will be put to shame (Isaiah 42:17).
Application
God delights in saving people—He wanted to save us and is excited about completing our salvation.
The only proper response is worship, trust, and participation in His mission.
We are not to place hope in idols—our hope is in the Servant, Jesus Christ.
As the sovereign Lord of history, God is working all things toward salvation through Christ.
If this is what God is doing, His mission must be the center of our personal and church life.
Evangelism should begin with prayer for the lost and open doors for the gospel.
The church exists not for our comfort, but for the glory of Christ and making disciples.
God’s main work in the world is saving and sanctifying people through the gospel.
