Honor God in both body and soul: care for your physical and spiritual life as one, unified whole redeemed by Christ.
Big Idea:
Human beings are both body and soul — physical and spiritual, designed by God to live as a unified whole. Both parts are good, both matter to God, and both are redeemed through Christ.
We exist for the glory of God, by the love of God, and out of the delight of God.
To be human is to bear the image of God — giving every life immeasurable dignity and worth.
That image is marred by sin but restored and renewed in Jesus Christ.
Scripture presents humans as body and soul, a physical and immaterial unity — not merely flesh, nor pure spirit.
Two extremes to avoid:
Materialism: we’re only physical, so every problem is biological.
Dualism: the body is evil and only the spirit matters.
Both distort God’s design; the Bible shows both body and soul as good and connected.
The Bible uses body/flesh (Hebrew basar, Greek sarx/soma) and soul/spirit (Hebrew nephesh/ruach, Greek psuch?/pneuma) often interchangeably.
The soul is the seat of life and personality; the spirit is the God-aware dimension of the same immaterial self.
Scripture treats us as dichotomous but united beings — physical and spiritual, operating together.
“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” (Matthew 10:28)
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8)
God made both body and soul good — Jesus took on a real body and redeems both.
Death separates what God designed to be together, which is why it feels so unnatural — but Christ reunites them forever in resurrection.
Spiritual health affects physical health, and physical wellbeing affects spiritual life.
Example: Elijah in 1 Kings 19 — God first gives him rest and food before addressing his heart.
Ministry must address the whole person: feed the hungry, counsel the hurting, preach the gospel, and care for both soul and body (James 2:15–17).
Sometimes a spiritual struggle needs confession and prayer; sometimes it just needs sleep, food, or rest.
God calls us to glorify Him with our bodies and our souls (Romans 12:1).
The church must serve people physically and spiritually — both are part of loving our neighbors.
Being human means acknowledging our limits and depending on the One who redeems every part of us.

We are called to recognize humanity’s universal need for Christ, uphold personal responsibility for sin, and proclaim the gospel with clarity and compassion.
Romans 5:12; Ezekiel 18:4, 20; Revelation 20:11-13
Because sin has shattered every part of human life, we must look to Christ as the only One who can truly restore what is broken and teach us how to live as God meant.
Genesis 3:7-19
A church with a clear, biblical view of sin will view the world realistically, depend on Christ fully, and minister to others with truth and compassion.
Genesis 3:1-24
Because every person bears the image of God, love all people, including those unlike you or opposed to you, with the dignity, mercy, and truth that reflect Christ Himself.
Genesis 1:26-27; Acts 17:26-27; James 2:1-9
Because every human life bears God’s image, we must honor, protect, and love all people with the same value, compassion, and dignity that God Himself gives.
Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 5:1-2; Titus 2:1-8
Because every person bears God’s image, treat every human life with dignity, and live each day reflecting the character of the One whose image you bear.
Genesis 1:26-28
