God and My Vote

GOD & MY VOTE

As a Christ follower, God is very concerned about the way I vote.

1. The Voice of Scripture

(Deuteronomy 16:19) “Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe.”

(Isaiah 1:2-3) Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the Lord has spoken; “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me. The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, My people do not understand.”

(Isaiah 1:10) Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God you people of Gomorrah!

(Isaiah 1:15b-17a, 21-23a) “Your hands are full of blood; wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of My sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed… See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her – but now murderers! Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts”.

(Isaiah 1:15) “When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.”

(Isaiah 1:24-25) Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty, the Mighty one of Israel, declares: “Ah, I will get relief from My foes… I will turn My hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.”

A. God does hold individuals responsible for the actions of government.

B. He expects us to vote for leaders who will defend His principles.

C. Apathy in our individual political involvement will damage our relationship with Him.

D. Apathy in our individual political involvement will bring judgment on our nation.

2. The Voice of our Fathers

A. Our founding fathers built our nation on the model of Scripture.

B. They expected us to vote for leaders who would lead according to God’s principles.

3. The Voice of Reason

Mark Twain:

· “A Christian’s first duty is to God.”

· “God is an issue in every election”

· “Duty to Him is above every claim of party.”

· “Vote for God at the polls”

· “Christians have betrayed (this country) and are destroying it.”

4. The Voice of Reality

Six Realities of American Politics:

· The president can issue executive orders.

· The president nominates heads of executive agencies.

· The president has the power to veto any bill.

· The president has the power to grant pardon.

· The president appoints all ambassadors, ministers and consuls.

· The president nominates Supreme Court justices.

(Luke 6:46) “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?”
