It’s important for us to understand the three categories of the Mosaic Law: Civil Law, Ceremonial Law, Moral Law.

(Matthew 5:17-18) “Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished.”
1. The Civil Law
A. This Civil Law is all the law that applies to governing God’s People.
a. Democracy – people are governed by elected leaders.
b. Aristocracy – people are governed by an elite few.
c. Monocracy – people are governed by a king.
d. Theocracy – people are governed by GOD.
B. Israel rejected God’s theocracy, and embraced man’s monocracy.
C. God’s Civil Law belonged to a theocracy that no longer existed.
2. The Ceremonial Law
A. The Ceremonial Law is all the law that applies to mediation with God.
B. All the Ceremonial Law points to Jesus.
C. When Jesus came there was no longer any need for the Ceremonial Law.
(Colossians 2:16-17) Don’t let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of what was to come; the substance is the Messiah.
3. The Moral Law
A. The Moral Law is all the law that applies to righteousness before God.
B. Only God’s Moral Law is binding on us today.
C. God’s Moral Law revolves around the Ten Commandments.
D. We can’t even keep God’s Moral Law.
