The Goodness of God/The Communicable Attributes

  • Holiness: Focused on the Aspect of Absolute Moral Purity – God is untouched and unstained by evil in the world. He does not in any sense participate in it.
    • Leviticus 11:44-45 – Moral Purity
    • James 1:13 – God is not tempted by evil.
    • Job 34:12
    • Habakkuk 1:12-13a – God cannot even look up sin due to His holiness
  • Righteousness – God always acts in accordance with what is right and is himself the final standard of what is right. It is God’s holiness applied to his relaitonships to other beings.

    • What is the basis of what is right?
    • Does this mean that God is selfish?
  • Justice – God’s official righteousness, that is His expectation that other moral agents walk in line with His righteousness.

  • Jealousy – God continually seeks to protect his honor.

  • Wrath – God intensely hates all sin.

  • Truthfulness – God is the true God, and all his knowledge and words are both true and the final standard of truth.
    • Genuineness – God is the real God

    • Veracity – He represents things as they truly are and always speaks truth

    • God expects His followers to be passionate for Truth and honesty

  • Faithfulness – God will always do what he has said and fulfill what he has promised

  • Goodness – God is the final standard of good, and all that God does is worthy of good.

  • Love – God’s eternally giving of himself to others. God’s concern for the welfare of those whom he loves. He unselfishly seeks our ultimate welfare. God’s love is an unselfish interest in us for our sake.

  • Mercy – God’s goodness toward those in misery and distress

  • Patiences/longsuffering – God’s goodness in withholding of punishment toward those who sin over a period of time.

  • Peace – God’s being and his actions are separate from all confusion and disorder, yet he is continually active in Innumerable well-ordered, fully controlled, simultaneous actions.

  • Blessedness – God delights fully in himself and in all that reflects his character

  • Beauty – God is the sum of all desirable qualities.
