OUR BASICS

Our church needs to build on some basics.

(Acts 1:12-14 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olive Grove, which is near Jerusalem – a Sabbath day’s journey away. When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. All these were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

1. WAITING

A. Waiting on God rarely makes sense – to “us”.

(Luke 24:29) “I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”

(Acts 1:4) While He was together with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise.

(4b-5) “This,” He said, “Is what you heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…”

(8) “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”

B. The first lesson we need to learn is to “wait” on God.

2. UNITY

(14) All these were continually united…

A. Unity between humans is a supernatural thing.

(John 13:34) “I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

B. Supernatural unity is evidence that we belong to Jesus.

3. PRAYER

(14) All these were continually united in prayer…

A. Prayer is what we do when we are facing uncertainty.

B. Prayer is holding on to God in the midst of uncertainty.
