The sermon that started everything!
(Acts 2:14-16) But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and proclaimed to them: “Jewish men and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you and pay attention to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:”
1. The Promised Holy Spirit (Acts 2:17-21)
(Acts 2:17-21) “‘And it will be in the last days’, says God, ‘that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. I will even pour out My Spirit on My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy. I will display wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and remarkable day of the Lord comes; then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” (quoted from Joel 2:28-32)
A. God would send the Holy Spirit.
B. ALL people would be eligible.
C. Both men and women would be recipients.
D. Men and women both would prophecy.
E. Miraculous signs would accompany it.
2. The Promised Messiah (Acts 2:22-28)
(Acts 2:25-28) “‘I saw the Lord ever before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover my flesh will rest in hope, because You will not leave my soul in Hades, or allow Your Holy One to see decay. You have revealed the paths of life to me; You will fill me with gladness in Your presence.’” (quoted from Psalm 16:8-11)
A. God promised through King David to send the Messiah.
B. Jesus demonstrated that He was the fulfillment of that promise.
3. The Promised Resurrection (Acts 2:29-32)
(Acts 2:31) “‘He was not left in Hades, and His flesh did not experience decay.’” (quoted from Psalm 16:10)
A. The one thing that separates us from other faith systems is the resurrection of our founder – Jesus.
B. Jesus’ resurrection is the best explanation of the historical evidence.
4. The Promised King (Acts 2:33-41)
(Acts 2:34-35) “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool.’” (quoted from Psalm 110:1)
A. As promised, God has made Jesus – King.
B. As promised, King Jesus forgives and saves.
