Self-Identify: “MARRIAGE”

God made you and your spouse for each other.

(1 Peter 3:1-7) Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live, when they observe your pure, reverent lives. Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hair styles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes; instead, it should consist of the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes. For in the past, the holy women who hoped in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do good and aren’t frightened by anything alarming. Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as co-heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

1. The Husband is Physically Stronger
(7) Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with understanding of their weaker nature.
   A. Men’s bodies are different than women’s bodies.
   B. Men have more physical strength than women.
(Genesis 3:16) Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will dominate you.
(1 Peter 3:7) Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as co-heirs of the grace of life.

2. The Wife is Spiritually Stronger
   A. Wives are typically the first to follow Christ.
   B. Later on, husbands follow their wives.
   C. Submit to your husbands to show them you are different.
   D. Let your inner beauty exceed your outer beauty.
(1 Samuel 16:7) “Man does not see what the Lord sees, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”

3. The Two are Individually Stronger
(Genesis 2:18) The Lord God said, “It is NOT GOOD for the man to be alone. I will make a HELPER who is like him.”
   A. God made Adam and Eve for each other.
   B. God made you and your spouse for each other.
   C. You are each stronger because of the other.

4. The Marriage is Divinely Stronger
   A. Synergy: The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
   B. The marriage is greater than just the combination of the two.
   C. “I take you to be my wedded spouse:
• To have and to hold
• From this day forward
• For better or for worse
• For richer or poorer
• Through sickness or health
• To love and to cherish
• Till death do us part
