Developing a Biblical Worldview: God’s Grace

05-22-2024 • Wes Wilkinson

We are encouraged to trust in God's unchanging compassion and grace, allowing His true nature to shape our understanding, worship, and daily actions.

Understanding a Biblical Worldview

  • Believers’ worldview is grounded in their theology and understanding of God.
  • A.W. Tozer emphasizes that the most crucial aspect of a person is their view of God: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
  • How one perceives God affects their relationship and adoration towards Him.

Misconceptions about God

  • People often see God through their fears or cultural influences.
  • Cultural views and bad examples can distort the true image of God.
  • Having a correct view of God is vital as it influences our actions and beliefs.

The Israelites at Mount Sinai

  • The Israelites journeyed from Egypt to Mount Sinai and set up camp there (Exodus 24:12-18).
  • Moses ascended the mountain to receive the stone tablets with God’s law.
  • During Moses’ absence, the Israelites grew impatient and demanded an idol (Exodus 32:1).

The Golden Calf Incident

  • Aaron yielded to the people’s demands and created a golden calf (Exodus 32:2-6).
  • The Israelites worshipped the idol and faced severe consequences for their actions (Exodus 32:7-35).
  • God’s response to their idolatry and Moses’ intercession for the people are significant.

Moses’ Intercession and God’s Test

  • God tested Moses’ leadership and character through this incident (Exodus 32:9-14).
  • Moses pleaded for God’s mercy based on His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Exodus 32:11-13).
  • God decided to spare the Israelites but still imposed consequences for their sin (Exodus 32:14).

The Aftermath and God’s Presence

  • Upon returning to the camp, Moses broke the tablets as a symbol of the broken covenant (Exodus 32:19).
  • Moses confronted Aaron and led the people to repentance (Exodus 32:21-29).
  • The Tent of Meeting was set up outside the camp, where God’s presence continued to be with Moses (Exodus 33:7-11).

God’s Compassion and Grace

  • God revealed His character to Moses in Exodus 34:5-7.
  • God proclaimed His name and attributes: compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving-kindness and truth, forgiving iniquity, and maintaining justice.
  • Moses worshipped God and pleaded for His continued presence with the people (Exodus 34:8-9).

Scripture References to God’s Attributes

  • Psalm 103:8 – “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”
  • Psalm 86:15 – “But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
  • Isaiah 49:14-16 – “But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.’ Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
  • Jeremiah 9:23-24 – “Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'”

Application for Believers

  • Committing to prayer for a deeper understanding of God’s grace and compassion is essential. (Ephesians 1:17)
  • Trusting God’s word and character is crucial in daily life.
  • Believers should emulate God’s compassion and grace in their interactions with others.
