Sermon Notes
I. Onesiphorus: The Courageous Servant (2 Timothy 1:13–18)
-
Paul writes from prison in Rome, abandoned by many of his companions.
-
Onesiphorus stands out: he “diligently searched for Paul and found him.”
-
He was not ashamed of Paul’s chains but ministered to him courageously and faithfully.
-
His example highlights that ministry often requires courage—to step forward when others step back.
-
True ministry means seeking out those in need, even when it’s uncomfortable or risky.
II. The Spirit of Power, Not Fear (2 Timothy 1:6–7)
-
Paul reminds Timothy to “keep ablaze the gift of God.”
-
Believers are given “a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind.”
-
Fear can paralyze us, but God’s Spirit empowers us to act with courage.
-
Ministry and obedience require stepping forward despite uncertainty or risk.
III. A Living Sacrifice (Romans 12:1–2)
-
Believers are called to present their bodies as “living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.”
-
Unlike the old temple sacrifices, our service is ongoing—life given daily to God.
-
The Spirit makes us holy and enables us to live out this sacrifice in our daily work and ministry.
-
Transformation comes from the renewing of our minds through Scripture and truth.
-
To renew our minds, we must regularly immerse ourselves in God’s Word to discern truth in a confused world.
IV. Courage Through the Presence of God
-
Fear not is a recurring command throughout Scripture.
-
Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God goes with you.”
-
Psalm 23:4 — “I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
-
John 14:27 — “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
-
These verses remind us that courage comes not from self-confidence, but from God’s continual presence.
V. The Church: Called to Bold Service
-
The church is the body of Christ, built upon the confession that Jesus is Lord (Matthew 16:18).
-
God is the one who builds His church; our role is obedience—to plant, water, and serve faithfully.
-
Like Onesiphorus, we are called to “be the one”—to take initiative, to encourage, to lift others up.
-
Courageous service strengthens the church and honors God.
