Walking in the Spirit: Knowing and Relating to the Holy Spirit

Main Scripture Passages

  • Primary Texts: John 14:16-17, 25-26; John 16:5-15
  • Supporting Texts: Galatians 5:16, Matthew 28:19, Acts 5:3-4, Romans 8:9-11

1. The Personhood of the Holy Spirit

  • The Holy Spirit is not an “it” or an abstract force but a distinct person of the Trinity.
  • Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “He” (John 14, John 16).
  • The Holy Spirit has personal attributes:
    • Convicts (John 16:8).
    • Guides in truth (John 16:13).
    • Speaks, teaches, reminds, and glorifies Jesus (John 14:26, John 16:14).

Key Point: The Holy Spirit is personal, relational, and active in believers’ lives.

2. The Holy Spirit Is Fully God

  • Equal in authority and divinity with the Father and the Son (Matthew 28:19).
  • Described as eternal (Hebrews 9:14) and omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10-11).
  • Acts of the Spirit reflect divine power:
    • Indwelling believers (1 Corinthians 6:19).
    • Convicting and regenerating hearts (John 3:5-8).
    • Performing signs and wonders (Romans 15:19).

Key Point: The Holy Spirit’s divine nature confirms His critical role in the believer’s life.

3. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Believers

  • The Holy Spirit’s primary roles:
    • Conviction: Revealing sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11).
    • Regeneration: Enabling spiritual rebirth (John 3:5-8).
    • Sanctification: Producing fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).
    • Guidance: Leading and teaching believers in truth (John 16:13).
    • Empowerment: Equipping for ministry (Acts 1:8).
    • Sealing: Guaranteeing salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14).

4. Misunderstandings About the Holy Spirit

  • Overemphasis: Some traditions focus excessively on mystical or experiential aspects.
  • Neglect: Others fail to engage with the Spirit’s role, limiting understanding and relationship.
  • The Spirit’s primary work is to glorify Christ and point believers to Him (John 16:14).

Key Point: Balanced understanding leads to accurate worship and reliance on the Spirit.

5. Responding to the Holy Spirit

  • Worship: Honor the Holy Spirit as God through songs, prayers, and correct theology.
  • Prayer: Seek the Spirit’s guidance, boldness, and fruit in daily life.
  • Reliance: Depend on the Spirit’s power for sanctification and ministry.
  • Obedience: Follow the Spirit’s promptings with trust and humility.

Conclusion

  • The Holy Spirit is the power and presence of God in believers’ lives.
  • Walking in the Spirit enables believers to overcome sin and live out their mission.
  • The Spirit glorifies Jesus in us, through us, and to us, shaping us into Christlikeness.

Final Call

  • Be sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.
