Holy Spirit Pt. 8

02-12-2025 • Wes Wilkinson

We can live in the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit, reject condemnation, walk in obedience, and trust His work to transform and sustain us.

Romans 8 & The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit?

  • The Holy Spirit is a person, not an impersonal force.
  • He is God, the third person of the Trinity.
  • How we relate to Him should reflect that He is God:
    • We should respect, fear, love, and seek Him.
  • We often misunderstand the Holy Spirit or use Him as an excuse for personal desires.

His Work in the Believer’s Life

  1. Regeneration – Brings the believer from death to life.
  2. Conviction – Exposes sin and leads to repentance.
  3. Comforting & Strengthening – Provides encouragement and boldness.
  4. Teaching & Reminding – Brings Scripture to mind and helps us understand truth.
  5. Guiding & Leading – Directs believers in alignment with God’s will.
  6. Empowering – Enables believers to serve and glorify God.
  7. Filling – Controls and works through the believer.

Romans 8: The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

1. No Condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1-4)

  • Key Verse: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
  • Condemnation means both:
    • Being declared guilty.
    • Facing the just punishment for sin.
  • The Holy Spirit frees believers from this condemnation.
  • The law could not save us due to the weakness of our flesh, but God did through Christ.

2. Walking in the Spirit vs. Walking in the Flesh (Romans 8:5-8)

  • The mind set on the flesh leads to death.
  • The mind set on the Spirit leads to life and peace.
  • The flesh is hostile to God and cannot please Him.
  • A believer is no longer controlled by the flesh but by the Spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit is the Mark of Salvation (Romans 8:9-11)

  • If the Holy Spirit dwells in someone, they belong to Christ.
  • The Holy Spirit is the assurance of salvation.
  • Even though our physical bodies will die, the Spirit brings spiritual life now and will raise us in the future.

4. The Power to Overcome Sin (Romans 8:12-13)

  • Believers no longer owe anything to the flesh.
  • Through the Holy Spirit, we can put to death the deeds of the body.
  • Mortification – The process of putting sin to death.
  • We can say no to sin because of the Spirit’s power.

5. The Holy Spirit’s Ministry Gives Hope (Romans 8:14-17)

  • The Spirit leads believers and confirms they are children of God.
  • He enables intimacy with God (“Abba, Father”).
  • He assures us of our inheritance with Christ.

Application & Encouragement

  • There is no condemnation for those in Christ—do not live under false guilt.
  • The Holy Spirit empowers believers to say no to sin.
  • Spiritual growth and peace come from walking in the Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit is our assurance of salvation and hope of resurrection.
  • Do you understand and trust what He is doing in your life?
