Holy Spirit Pt. 9

We can trust the Holy Spirit to lead, assure, and empower us in Christ.

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:12-30)

Who is the Holy Spirit and What Does He Do?

  • The Holy Spirit regenerates, convicts, teaches, leads, guides, empowers, and gifts believers.
  • One key aspect of His work is that He ministers to us—comforting, counseling, and assuring us as children of God.

Romans 8:12-13 – No Longer Obligated to the Flesh

  • As believers, we are not under obligation to the flesh—we owe sin nothing.
  • Instead, we are called to put to death the deeds of the flesh by the Spirit.
  • This is not about “paying Jesus back” but walking in the Spirit for God’s glory.

Romans 8:14 – The Mark of a True Christian

  • Those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God—His children.
  • The Spirit’s leadership is constant and ongoing (present tense verb).
  • He leads us both intellectually (discernment of right and wrong) and experientially (empowering us to obey).

Romans 8:15 – Spirit of Adoption, Not Fear

  • The Holy Spirit does not lead us into slavery and fear but into the security of adoption as God’s children.
  • Adoption in the Roman world was permanent and intentional—adopted sons could never be disowned.
  • Because of our adoption, we do not relate to God in fear but in confidence and love.

Romans 8:15 – “Abba, Father”

  • “Abba” is an intimate yet respectful term for a father, used by Jesus when praying.
  • This is not a casual or flippant name for God, but one that carries security, trust, and deep love.
  • The Holy Spirit helps us experience this relational security with God.

Romans 8:16-17 – The Holy Spirit Testifies to Our Identity

  • The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
  • Assurance is both objective (evidence of transformation in our lives) and subjective (an internal sense of peace and security).
  • If we are children, then we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, sharing in His glory.

Romans 8:18-25 – Suffering, Groaning, and Hope

  • The sufferings of this life are incomparable to the coming glory.
  • All creation groans for redemption, just as believers do.
  • The Holy Spirit is our first taste of what is to come, creating a longing for the full redemption of our bodies and the world.
  • Hope is not based on what we see but on God’s promise of future glory.

Romans 8:26-27 – The Holy Spirit Prays for Us

  • In our weakness and suffering, when we don’t know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
  • He prays perfectly according to the will of God, ensuring that God’s best purpose is being worked out in our lives.
  • This means that even when we don’t understand our circumstances, God is at work through the Spirit’s prayers.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome sin and walk in righteousness.
  2. He assures us that we belong to God and are His adopted children.
  3. He creates in us a longing for eternity and the fullness of God’s kingdom.
  4. He prays for us in our weakness, ensuring that God’s perfect will is carried out.

Closing Reflection

  • The ministry of the Holy Spirit is not just theological knowledge but an experiential reality that we are called to rest in, trust, and walk in daily.
  • As Jesus said, “It is better that I go away so that the Spirit may come.”
  • Let us trust the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, knowing He is leading us, assuring us, and interceding for us always.
