  • Alexis de Tocqueville observed the significant influence of Christianity in America.

Historical Background:

  • Key events in the late 1400s include the invention of the printing press and Columbus’s voyage.
  • Martin Luther’s 95 Theses initiated the Protestant Reformation in 1517.
  • Henry VIII’s actions led to the English Reformation and the separation from the Roman Catholic Church.

Key Figures and Events:

  • Henry VIII’s six marriages significantly impacted religious and political dynamics.
  • Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell pushed England towards Protestantism.
  • William Tyndale played a crucial role in publishing the first English Bible.

Mary I and the Return to Catholicism:

  • Mary persecuted Protestants, causing many to flee to the continent.
  • Thomas Cranmer’s execution profoundly impacted the Protestant community.

Elizabeth I and the Establishment of the Church of England:

  • Elizabeth’s “Via Medea” approach combined Protestant doctrine with Catholic-like practices.
