10-16-2024 • Wes Wilkinson

We are called to disciple and nurture our families in God’s truth, ensuring that future generations know and follow Him.

The Biblical Foundation of Family and Society

Biblical View of Family:

  • Genesis 1:26-28 describes God’s creation of mankind in His image, assigning them dominion over creation.
  • Family is the first institution created by God, starting with Adam and Eve, and the foundation of society.
  • The command to “be fruitful and multiply” emphasizes the role of families in continuing God’s work and filling the earth.

Marriage and Roles:

  • Marriage is the union that forms the foundation of the family.
  • Ephesians 5 and 1 Peter 3 describe the roles of husbands and wives, emphasizing mutual submission and sacrificial love.
  • Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church, while wives are to honor and respect their husbands.

Children as Blessings:

  • Psalm 127 describes children as a gift from the Lord.
  • The family’s responsibility is to disciple children, teaching them to love and follow God.
  • Deuteronomy 6 instructs parents to teach their children God’s commandments diligently.

Challenges to the Family in Modern Society:

  • Secular worldviews, such as Marxism and postmodernism, often devalue or attack the family structure.
  • The breakdown of family, marriage, and proper roles leads to societal instability.

The Church’s Role:

  • Titus 2 highlights the responsibility of the church to disciple families.
  • Older generations are to pass down wisdom and biblical instruction to younger generations.
  • The church must be committed to upholding and supporting biblical family values.

Conclusion:

  • The family is central to God’s design for society and His redemptive work.
  • The church plays a vital role in discipling families and promoting biblical family structures.
  • Christians must be proactive in defending and living out God’s purpose for family and society.
