We can trust in God's unchanging word, find comfort in His promises, and live in faithful anticipation of His coming.

Isaiah 40 – Words for the Weary

1. Introduction

  • Isaiah 40 marks a shift in the book, moving from judgment to comfort.
  • This passage speaks to those in exile—physically, spiritually, or emotionally—offering hope in God’s faithfulness.
  • The message centers on God’s comfort, the call to prepare for His coming, and the enduring nature of His word.

2. God’s Comfort for His People (Isaiah 40:1-2)

  • God commands comfort for His people, reaffirming His covenant with them.
  • Their suffering and labor have ended, and their sins have been removed.
  • This is a message of restoration, not because of their righteousness, but because of God’s grace.

3. Preparing the Way for the Lord (Isaiah 40:3-5)

  • A voice calls for the preparation of a highway for God’s coming.
  • Valleys are lifted, mountains made low—nothing will hinder His arrival.
  • This was fulfilled in part by John the Baptist and ultimately points to Christ’s second coming.

4. The Frailty of Man vs. The Permanence of God’s Word (Isaiah 40:6-8)

  • Humanity is like grass—fleeting and fragile—while God’s word stands forever.
  • Earthly power, beauty, and achievements fade, but His promises never fail.
  • This is a call to place trust in what is eternal rather than what is temporary.

5. Proclaiming the Good News (Isaiah 40:9-11)

  • Zion is commanded to proclaim, “Here is your God!”
  • The Lord comes with power, ruling with strength, yet also as a gentle shepherd.
  • He gathers His people, carries them close, and faithfully leads them.

6. Encouragement for the Church

  • God’s comfort is available to all who trust in Him.
  • The call to prepare still applies—believers must live in anticipation of Christ’s return.
  • The world is unstable, but God’s word remains the anchor for His people.
  • As those who have received this comfort, we are called to proclaim it to others.

7. Conclusion and Prayer

  • God has not abandoned His people—He is coming, and nothing will stop Him.
  • Our hope is not in human strength, but in the everlasting word of God.
  • As we wait, we trust, prepare, and proclaim His truth.
