True followers of Jesus walk humbly in unity, valuing others above themselves.
Words for the Weary
Following Jesus is often described in Scripture as walking a path (John 14:6; Acts 9:2). On this path, we should expect trials, seasons of wilderness, and even suffering (Philippians 1:27–30).
Paul urges the Philippians to live “worthy of the gospel of Christ” by standing firm together in unity, striving side by side for the faith (Philippians 1:27).
Unity requires believers to be of the same mind, the same love, and one purpose (Philippians 2:2). Jesus Himself prayed for this unity in His church (John 17:21).
True unity flows from humility. Paul writes, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3–4). Humility means rightly seeing ourselves before God (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:6).
Jesus is the perfect model of humility: though fully God, He emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:6–8). Because of this, God exalted Him above every name (Philippians 2:9–11).
For the church today, walking in humility means valuing others above ourselves, serving without seeking recognition, and being willing to embrace obscurity for God’s glory.
