Words for the Weary Pt. 14

07-23-2025 • Wes Wilkinson

To embrace the family of God means loving one another with Christlike, enduring love.

  • The Church as Family

    • Scripture describes the church as God’s family — sons and daughters bound not by natural blood, but by the blood of Christ (1 John 3:1; Hebrews 10:24–25).

    • The primary biblical picture of the church is family, where we gather, encourage, and walk together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • What the Church Does

    • We gather for worship, teaching, fellowship, and prayer (Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:24–25).

    • We serve one another and do good, “especially to those of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:9–10).

    • We go together to make disciples (Matthew 28:18–20) and grow in intergenerational discipleship (Titus 2:1–8).

  • The Priority of Love

    • Spiritual gifts and impressive acts are worthless without love (1 Corinthians 13:1–3).

    • Love is defined not by emotion or preference but by Christlike action: patient, kind, not envious or arrogant, not self-seeking, not easily provoked, forgiving, rejoicing in truth (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).

    • Love never fails; gifts and knowledge will pass away, but faith, hope, and love remain — and “the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:8, 13).

  • Living Out Love in the Church

    • Biblical love means setting aside personal preferences and reputations for the good of the body.

    • Love shows up in patience with one another’s weaknesses, proactive kindness, believing the best, and bearing burdens together (Galatians 6:2).

    • Church hurt is real, but love does not quit the church; instead, it perseveres, forgives, and keeps building up Christ’s body (Colossians 3:12–14).
