Words for the Weary Pt. 5

04-09-2025 • Wes Wilkinson

God lovingly disciplines and faithfully redeems His people, so we must not fear, but trust Him and listen to His Word, even in hardship.

Main Theme

God is both holy and loving, good in His discipline and faithful in His redemption.

Context & Setup

  • The people of God are in a weary, wilderness-like place—either under siege or in exile (Isaiah 42:18–25).

  • They are facing judgment because of their sin, rebellion, and refusal to obey God.

God’s Rebuke of His People (Isaiah 42:18–25)

  • God’s people are blind and deaf to His Word and ways.

    • “Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!” (v. 18)

  • The servant here (v. 19) is not the Messiah but Israel, God’s chosen people who are failing in their role.

  • Israel has seen and heard God’s truth but ignores it (v. 20).

  • God had made His law glorious, yet His people disregarded it (v. 21).

  • Because of their rebellion, they are plundered and trapped (v. 22).

  • God allowed this judgment as discipline (v. 24–25), but His people failed to recognize it or respond.

God’s Comfort and Hope (Isaiah 43:1–7)

  • In contrast to judgment, God offers comfort with the words “But now…” (43:1).

  • God reminds them who He is and what He’s done:

    • He created and formed them (v. 1).

    • He redeemed them and called them by name—they belong to Him (v. 1).

  • God promises His presence through every trial:

    • Through water, rivers, and fire—they will not be destroyed (v. 2).

  • God is their Lord, Redeemer, Holy One, and Savior (v. 3).

  • He gave other nations as ransom to rescue them (v. 3–4).

  • He declares His people as precious, honored, and loved (v. 4).

  • He promises to gather His people from all over the earth (v. 5–7).

Key Applications for Christians

  • God’s discipline is both correction and training; both are expressions of His love.

  • Even in the wilderness, God is present, sovereign, and working for our good.

  • We must not be blind and deaf to His Word or His discipline.

  • We can take refuge in God’s promises, even in hardship.
