Trust God in every circumstance, worship Him alone, and faithfully do the next right thing.
God’s intent is to comfort His people (Isaiah 40 context).
He emphasizes His sovereignty, control over history, and contrasts Himself with false gods and idols.
God’s personal identity:
The Lord (Yahweh) – His personal covenant name, signifying majesty, faithfulness, and intimate relationship.
Your Redeemer – obligated protector who delivers His people.
The One who formed you – intimately involved from the womb (personal and corporate identity).
Maker of all things – He alone created and sustains the universe, needs no assistance.
God’s control over history:
Frustrates false prophets, diviners, and human predictions.
Only His Word, rightly understood, will always be fulfilled.
Promises Jerusalem and Judah will be rebuilt despite apparent impossibility.
Can perform miracles (dry seas and rivers).
God’s unexpected methods:
Chooses Cyrus (Koresh), a pagan king, as His “shepherd” to fulfill His purpose.
Cyrus, a foreigner, will decree the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple.
Cyrus referred to as God’s anointed (“Messiah” in Hebrew), surprising and radical choice.
God empowers Cyrus to conquer nations decisively (Babylonian empire), subduing kings easily.
Historical fulfillment:
Cyrus raised secretly by a shepherd after grandfather’s attempted murder.
Successfully unifies Medes and Persians, conquers Babylon without significant resistance.
Unusually kind toward Jews, authorizes and finances rebuilding Jerusalem and the Temple.
For Cyrus: to acknowledge that the Lord alone is God, though Cyrus doesn’t fully grasp it.
For Israel: to trust God, avoid worshiping or fearing human leaders (like Cyrus or Babylon).
For the world: that all people may recognize the one true God who alone governs history.
God declares Himself responsible for both prosperity and calamity; ultimate authority over all events.
God calls for righteousness and salvation to pour down and spring up, resulting in visible transformation.
God’s ultimate intent is spiritual fruitfulness and a clear witness to His glory.
Trust God’s Sovereignty: Recognize God’s providence in both global events and daily life.
Worship God Alone: Avoid fear and idolization of human leaders or worldly systems.
Accept God’s Provision: Even when it comes from unexpected people or circumstances.
Do the Next Right Thing: Respond faithfully and obediently in everyday situations, trusting God’s larger purpose.
History belongs to God; our response should be worship, not worry.
True worship leads to faithfully accepting God’s unexpected provisions and consistently doing the next faithful, loving thing.
