Words for the Weary Pt. 11

05-21-2025 • Wes Wilkinson

Trust that the sovereign God will carry you and empower you to obey the next step He calls you to take.

God’s Sovereign Plan through Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1–7)

  • God “raised up My anointed” (Cyrus) to conquer Babylon (v. 1).

  • All Cyrus’s victories are God-given (v. 5–7).

  • “Woe to him who strives with his Maker” reminds us that God alone is Potter; His plans never fail (v. 9).

  • “Thus says the Lord… How dare you question Me?” emphasizes that God made and sustains all things by Himself (v. 11–13).

The Nations Drawn & Idols Shamed (Isaiah 45:14–17)

  • Egypt, Cush, Sabæans will “walk behind” Israel and “bow in chains,” likely depicting voluntary submission (v. 14).

  • Makers of idols go off “in shame and humiliation” while Israel’s salvation is “everlasting” (v. 16–17).

Creator God vs. False Idols (Isaiah 45:18–25)

  • God “did not create [the earth] a waste” but “formed it to be inhabited,” contrasting with powerless idols (v. 18).

  • God speaks in “righteousness,” not in secret, and His word “comes to pass” (v. 19, 23–24).

  • “To Me every knee shall bow… every tongue confess,” showing that all will ultimately acknowledge the one true God (v. 23).

God’s Faithful Care for His People (Isaiah 46:3–13)

  • God promises, “I have carried you from birth… even to your old age I will be the same,” illustrating His unchanging care (v. 3–4).

  • “Remember these things; bring them to mind,” as a challenge to reject idolatry and cling to God’s truth (v. 8–9).

  • “I have sworn… My word will not turn back,” assuring us that His promises are sure (v. 11).

Applications

  • Personal Faithfulness: Trust God’s hidden work in life’s “wilderness,” lament honestly before Him, and obey the next loving step He calls you to take.

  • Corporate Faithfulness: As a church, avoid idolizing traditions or preferences, and remain focused on making disciples of the one true God by stepping out in faithful, loving actions.

Conclusion

  • God’s plan culminates in global worship: “Turn to Me and be saved” (Isaiah 45:22).

  • Live under His sovereignty, confident that He will never put His people to shame.
