Worldview Rumble: Jesus vs. Marx Pt. 11

04-01-2026 • Wes Wilkinson

We must stand firm in the authority of Scripture and resist reshaping truth to fit cultural pressures.

The Core Problem

  • There is a growing pattern of quoting Scripture while twisting it to unbiblical ends.
  • This issue has spread beyond historic denominations into broader church life.
  • The root issue is a fundamental shift in authority and worldview.

The Rise of Protestant Liberalism

  • Protestant liberalism developed primarily in Europe, especially Germany.
  • The Enlightenment rejected the Bible and church as ultimate authority in favor of human reason.
  • Scripture began to be treated as a human document rather than divine revelation.
  • Faith shifted toward a subjective and personal experience rather than objective truth.

Rejection of the Supernatural

  • Naturalistic thinking led to denying miracles and the supernatural in Scripture.
  • The life and teaching of Jesus were reduced to moral principles.
  • Key elements of the gospel were reinterpreted or dismissed.

Higher Criticism and Its Effects

  • New methods of studying Scripture treated it like any other ancient text.
  • Traditional authorship of biblical books was widely questioned or denied.
  • Large portions of Scripture were redefined as later additions or human constructs.
  • These ideas were taught in seminaries and passed down to church leaders.

The Spread to the English World

  • These theological ideas moved from Europe into the British Isles.
  • Churches and institutions across denominations were influenced.
  • Even historically strong churches experienced internal conflict over doctrine.

The American Context

  • The American church developed differently due to geography and revival movements.
  • Evangelicalism emphasized conversion, Scripture, and evangelism.
  • Early on, these liberal ideas had little influence in American churches.

The Shift into America

  • The spread of ideas was gradual due to time, translation, and cultural distance.
  • By the early 20th century, these ideas began influencing academic institutions.
  • Churches remained mostly conservative, but seminaries began shifting.

The Modernist Mindset

  • Modernism sought to reshape Christianity based on new philosophy and scholarship.
  • Scripture was subjected to modern critique rather than trusted as authoritative.
  • Christianity was reinterpreted to fit evolving cultural and intellectual trends.
  • Supernatural elements were stripped away to find a “core” message.

The Rise of Fundamentalism

  • Fundamentalism emerged as a response to defend biblical truth.
  • It united various conservative Protestant groups around core doctrines.
  • This movement included both academic leaders and grassroots preachers.
  • Collaboration existed despite differences due to a shared concern for Scripture.

Core Doctrines Defended

  • The Bible is without error in its original writings.
  • Jesus was born of a virgin.
  • Jesus died as a substitutionary atonement for sin.
  • Jesus physically rose from the dead.
  • Jesus performed real miracles.

The Ongoing Conflict

  • Modernist ideas gained influence through education and cultural pressure.
  • Fundamentalists pushed back to preserve biblical authority.
  • The conflict shaped much of early 20th-century church life.
  • The effects of this conflict continue to influence the church today.
