Worldview Rumble: Jesus vs. Marx Pt. 10

03-25-2026 • Wes Wilkinson

We must hold fast to the true gospel and the full authority of Scripture so that modern pressure does not pull the church away from Christ.

Why This Matters

  • Church history helps explain how confusion and compromise have developed over time.
  • The root problem behind all confusion is sin and rebellion that began in Genesis 3.
  • Certain theological shifts weakened confidence in Scripture and the gospel.

A Warning Example

  • Some theological institutions showed major declines in belief in core doctrines over time.
  • Key truths such as the deity of Christ, miracles, and salvation through Jesus were questioned or denied.
  • Doctrinal compromise did not remain isolated but spread into broader church life.

The Intellectual Shift

  • The Enlightenment elevated human reason, science, and empirical thinking.
  • Naturalism taught that everything must have a natural explanation and rejected the supernatural.
  • Rapid cultural and scientific changes created pressure to reinterpret Christianity.
  • Some theologians began adapting biblical teaching to fit modern thought.

Early Theological Drift

  • Confidence in Scripture as fully inspired and true began to erode.
  • Scholars promoted studying the Bible without assuming it was true.
  • The Bible was increasingly treated as human literature rather than divine revelation.
  • Miracles and supernatural elements were often dismissed or reinterpreted.

Modernism and Cultural Influence

  • Modern thought encouraged confidence in human reasoning apart from God.
  • Evolutionary theory intensified challenges to biblical authority.
  • A growing gap formed between traditional beliefs and newer intellectual trends.
  • Many sought to reshape Christianity to align with modern culture.

Protestant Liberalism

  • Protestant liberalism attempted to preserve Christianity while removing its supernatural foundations.
  • The focus shifted from objective truth to personal religious experience.
  • Core doctrines such as sin, redemption, and the nature of Christ were redefined.
  • Christianity was increasingly reduced to moral teaching and social good.

The Result

  • Confidence in Scripture and the gospel was weakened.
  • Faith became more subjective and less anchored in truth.
  • Churches drifted toward emphasizing social action over the message of salvation.
  • The long-term effect was widespread theological confusion.
