Worldview Rumble: Jesus vs. Marx Pt. 12

04-15-2026 • Wes Wilkinson

We must know Scripture well so we can recognize and reject teaching that distorts the truth.

Tracing the Roots of Modern Theological Error

  • Recent theological movements have shaped how people reinterpret Scripture today.
  • Higher criticism treated the Bible as a purely human document with errors.
  • Many rejected the supernatural, including miracles and even the resurrection.
  • Some stripped away “myth” to keep only ethical teachings like caring for others.
  • These ideas led to new systems that mix truth with serious error.

Theology of Hope and Over-Realized Eschatology

  • Some teachings focus on bringing God’s future kingdom into the present.
  • Real hope is tied to the resurrection, but it is redirected toward present activism.
  • This view treats the future as open and shaped by human effort.
  • It can push believers to try to create a kind of earthly utopia.
  • Scripture teaches the kingdom is present in part but not yet fully realized.

Shifting Authority and Meaning in Scripture

  • Some approaches focus on the story of Scripture rather than its truth.
  • Accuracy is treated as less important than the message about Jesus.
  • This removes the foundation for knowing what is actually true.
  • It allows people to reshape meaning based on personal perspective.
  • The authority of Scripture becomes weakened or ignored.

Liberation Theology and Its Variations

  • Liberation theology starts from situations of oppression and reinterprets doctrine.
  • It blends Christian language with political and economic ideas, often from Marxism.
  • Salvation is redefined as social and group-based rather than individual reconciliation with God.
  • Sin is reframed as injustice in systems instead of personal rebellion against God.
  • Jesus is presented mainly as a revolutionary against oppressive structures.
  • Variations include Latin American, Black, and feminist liberation theology.
  • Each centers on a specific oppressed group and reshapes theology around that lens.

Discernment and Guarding Against Error

  • These ideas often contain small truths mixed with serious falsehood.
  • Real suffering and injustice can make these teachings feel compelling.
  • Biblical truth must remain the standard, even when addressing real pain.
  • False teaching often uses Christian language while distorting its meaning.
  • Knowing Scripture clearly is the best protection against being misled.
