Worldview Rumble: Jesus vs. Marx Pt. 3

01-28-2026 • Wes Wilkinson

Christians are called to hold firmly to God’s absolute moral truth, live it out with humility and love, and speak the truth clearly and compassionately in a culture shaped by moral relativism.

Secular Humanism: Theology and Philosophy

  • Secular humanism is fundamentally atheistic and rejects the existence of God or any supernatural reality.

  • Humanism places humanity at the center, treating human reason and science as the highest sources of truth.

  • Reality is understood as purely natural and material, with all phenomena explained through natural causes.

  • Humanism assumes that humanity arrived by chance through evolution and has no divine purpose or destiny.

  • This worldview views belief in God, especially the Christian God, as outdated, harmful, and oppressive to human freedom.

Ethics in Secular Humanism

  • Secular humanism teaches that morality is not absolute but is created by humans.

  • Ethical standards are viewed as flexible, evolving, and relative to individuals or societies.

  • Moral decisions are often evaluated by personal feelings, social consensus, or perceived outcomes rather than objective truth.

  • Without a transcendent moral authority, there is no fixed basis for right and wrong.

  • Humanist thinkers acknowledge that moral relativism struggles to provide a firm foundation for moral responsibility.

Biblical Ethics

  • The biblical worldview affirms that God exists, is personal, and is the ultimate source of truth and morality.

  • Scripture teaches that objective moral truth flows from God’s unchanging nature and character.

  • Biblical ethics are not arbitrary rules but reflections of who God is.

  • All people are created in the image of God and possess an inherent awareness of right and wrong through conscience.

  • Humanity is morally broken by sin and cannot live out God’s ethical standard apart from redemption in Christ.

The Core of Christian Ethics

  • Christian ethics are summarized by loving God with all one’s heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  • Loving God necessarily leads to loving others as oneself.

  • The Christian life is marked by holiness, self-control, and growing Christlikeness through the work of the Holy Spirit.

  • Obedience to God’s moral will leads to genuine flourishing rather than oppression.

Living Out Biblical Ethics

  • Believers are called to seek the good of their families, churches, communities, and society.

  • Loving others includes meeting both physical and spiritual needs.

  • Faithful obedience produces communities marked by generosity, care, and joy.

  • The Christian ethic produces the kind of restored community that human-centered worldviews promise but cannot achieve.

Application

  • Christians are called to hold firmly to God’s absolute moral truth, live it out with humility and love, and speak the truth clearly and compassionately in a culture shaped by moral relativism.
